The Next Big Thing in Express Entry Canada

Currently, the Express Entry system evaluates candidates from a general pool of candidates based on factors such as age, education, work history, job posting, and language proficiency (including French). Those who meet the Overall Ranking Score (CRS) cutoff are invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada. Canada is planning a major overhaul of its points-based Express Entry system. This will allow the Government of Canada to invite candidates who meet real-time workforce requirements.

According to the proposed bill, a new version of the Express Entry system would allow invitations to be made based on criteria such as specific educational backgrounds and industry-based occupations. Canada plans to reopen Express Entry draws for all three of the classes in early July, and the wait for new applications is expected to be six months, similar to pre-pandemic. Canada will suspend express entry draws for the CEC category in late 2021, and FSWP candidate draws have been suspended from December 2022.

The country also announced additional benefits for international students recently. Starting Summer of 2022, international students in Canada with post-graduation work permits that expire between January 2022 and December will get an additional open work permit valid for up to 18 months qualified to do so. The IRCC said it was “considering a simplified and expedited process for this, and details will be announced in the coming weeks.” About 95,000 PGWPs will expire in 2022.

Express Entry Eligible candidates for our Canada program can complete an online profile that includes various details about themselves including skills, language skills, educational background, and previous work experience. Candidates who successfully meet the criteria of one or more federal economic immigration programs under Express Entry are classified into a pool of eligible individuals. These individuals are ranked according to their prospects for financial success, with the highest-ranking candidates, and those with eligible job openings or State/Territory nominations (which are automatically ranked higher). 

This allows Canada to pick the best candidates who are likely to succeed, rather than just picking the next candidate. There is no guarantee that candidates who complete the Express Entry Profile will be invited to apply for permanent residency. Candidates who apply to the Express Entry Canada program but are not invited to apply for permanent residency after one year may resubmit their profile and rejoin the pool as long as they remain eligible for the program.
