Australia PR Visa
Australia PR: Secure Your Future in One of the World's Best Destinations
Australia Permanent Residency Visa
Plan your move to Australia with a clear understanding of your options.
Australian permanent residency can give you the opportunity to establish a home, develop your career and plan your family's future in Australia. Your pathway depends on factors such as your occupation, qualifications, work experience, English ability, family circumstances and access to nomination or sponsorship.
Nexus Migration helps you understand the requirements, organise your documents and prepare for the stages involved in an Australian migration application. Start with a review of your profile to identify which pathways may suit your circumstances.
What is Australian permanent residency?
Australian permanent residency, often called Australia PR, is the status associated with holding an Australian permanent visa. It generally allows you to remain in Australia indefinitely and to work and study here. Different visa subclasses have different eligibility requirements. There is no single application that covers every person seeking permanent residence. [1]
Permanent residence and travel validity are different. A first permanent visa usually includes a five-year travel facility. When that facility expires, it does not mean that a permanent resident already in Australia must leave. However, returning from overseas as a permanent resident requires a valid travel facility, which may mean obtaining a Resident Return visa. Check your grant letter and visa details before travelling. [2]
PR also differs from citizenship. It does not automatically provide an Australian passport or the full rights of an Australian citizen. Citizenship requires a separate application and satisfaction of the applicable requirements. [1, 30]
Benefits of Australian permanent residency
A long-term home
Permanent residence generally allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely, subject to Australian law and your visa circumstances.
Work and study opportunities
PR provides broad access to employment and study. Some occupations require professional registration, and some jobs have citizenship or security requirements.
Access to Medicare
Eligible permanent residents can enrol in Australia's public healthcare system. Medicare covers or subsidises specified services; it does not make every treatment or healthcare expense free. [3, 4]
Education planning for your family
Your residency status can affect education arrangements and fees. Check the relevant school, state education authority or institution, and budget for course fees, materials and other expenses.
Family migration possibilities
You may be able to sponsor eligible relatives through a suitable family visa category. Each category has its own criteria.
A possible citizenship pathway
Eligible permanent residents can apply for citizenship once they meet residence and other requirements. [1, 30]
Access to government payments is assessed separately. Newly arrived residents may face waiting periods before receiving certain payments or concession cards. [5]
Main pathways to Australian permanent residency
The best starting point is to identify a visa that matches your circumstances. Skilled, employer-sponsored and family routes operate under different rules.
Skilled migration: compare subclasses 189, 190 and 491
| Visa pathway | Status | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Independent visa - subclass 189, Points-tested stream | Permanent | Invitation required; no state nomination, employer sponsorship or family sponsorship required. |
| Skilled Nominated visa - subclass 190 | Permanent | Requires state or territory nomination and an invitation. Eligible nomination contributes 5 points. |
| Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa - subclass 491 | Provisional, for 5 years | Requires state or territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship, plus an invitation. Qualifying nomination or sponsorship contributes 15 points. Regional conditions apply. |
These pathways use SkillSelect and a points test. The minimum threshold is 65 points, including applicable nomination or sponsorship points. Reaching that threshold does not guarantee an invitation. [6-10]
Subclass 189: independent skilled migration
This pathway may suit applicants with an eligible skilled occupation who can meet the points-tested requirements without nomination or sponsorship. Selection depends on the government's invitation process, available places and the applicant's profile. [6]
Subclass 190: state or territory nomination
States and territories select applicants against their own nomination criteria. Occupation priorities, work or residence requirements, application procedures and available places can differ. Applicants should understand the commitments they make to their nominating state or territory. For example, Victoria uses a separate Registration of Interest process alongside SkillSelect. [7, 26]
Subclass 491: a regional pathway with a later PR application
Subclass 491 is a provisional visa, not permanent residence. Holders must follow the conditions that apply to living, working and studying in designated regional areas. A later application for permanent residence may be possible through subclass 191 if all requirements are met. [8, 11]
Regional migration is not limited to remote towns. Designated regional areas include locations such as Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart. Check the official postcode rules for the intended location. [12]
Subclass 191: permanent residence after an eligible regional visa
The Regional Provisional stream of the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa is a permanent pathway for eligible subclass 491 and 494 holders. Applicants must have held an eligible visa for at least three years and complied with its conditions.
The current requirements include Australian Taxation Office notices of assessment for three income years out of the five years of the eligible visa. There is no minimum income requirement for this stream. Health, character and the remaining eligibility requirements still apply. PR is not granted automatically when three years have passed. [11]
Employer-sponsored permanent residence
The Employer Nomination Scheme visa, subclass 186, allows eligible skilled workers nominated by an employer to obtain permanent residence. Its streams include Direct Entry, Temporary Residence Transition and Labour Agreement, with different requirements. [13, 14]
An Australian job offer alone does not establish eligibility. The employer's nomination and the applicant's occupation, skills, experience, English, age and any available exemptions must be assessed under the relevant stream.
The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, is temporary. It may support a later employer-sponsored PR pathway for an eligible worker, but that transition needs a separate qualifying application. The subclass 494 visa is also provisional and regional; eligible holders may later qualify for subclass 191. [14-16]
Partner and family migration
Eligible partners and other family members of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens may have family migration options. Partner visas commonly involve temporary or provisional and permanent stages. Evidence of the relationship and eligibility of the sponsor are central to the application. [17]
Parent and other family categories have separate requirements, charges and processing arrangements. Being related to an Australian resident does not automatically create a right to permanent residence. [18]
National Innovation Visa and existing business pathways
The National Innovation visa, subclass 858, is an invitation-only permanent visa for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement. It is a specialised route, with its own selection and nomination requirements. [19]
The Business Innovation and Investment Program closed to new applications on 31 July 2024. Eligible existing provisional visa holders may still have options under the subclass 888 permanent visa arrangements. A business investment should not be presented as an automatic route to Australian PR. [20]
Australia PR eligibility for points-tested skilled migration
For the main applicant under subclasses 189, 190 and 491, key requirements generally include:
- Being under 45 when invited to apply.
- Nominating an occupation eligible for the selected visa.
- Holding a suitable skills assessment that meets the applicable requirements.
- Having at least competent English at invitation.
- Meeting the 65-point minimum and substantiating the points claimed in the invitation.
- Receiving an invitation through SkillSelect.
- Obtaining nomination or eligible sponsorship where required.
- Meeting health, character and other visa requirements. [6-8]
These are skilled-migration criteria, not universal rules for every permanent visa. Partner, employer-sponsored and specialised pathways need their own assessment. Your visa history, family circumstances and supporting evidence can also affect eligibility.
How does the Australia PR points system work?
Your indicative score reflects eligible, documented claims. The following table summarises common factors; each factor has detailed rules. [9, 10]
| Points factor | Indicative points available |
|---|---|
| Age | 18-24: 25; 25-32: 30; 33-39: 25; 40-44: 15. |
| English | Competent: 0; proficient: 10; superior: 20. |
| Eligible overseas skilled work | 3-4 years: 5; 5-7 years: 10; 8 or more years: 15. |
| Eligible Australian skilled work | 1-2 years: 5; 3-4 years: 10; 5-7 years: 15; 8 or more years: 20. |
| Recognised qualifications | Doctorate: 20; bachelor degree or qualifying higher degree: 15; eligible Australian diploma/trade qualification or recognised occupational qualification: 10. |
| Partner circumstances | Up to 10, depending on relationship status and the partner's citizenship, residence, English and skills. |
| Subclass 190 nomination | 5. |
| Subclass 491 nomination or eligible family sponsorship | 15. |
Work experience points relate to qualifying employment in the ten years before invitation. Australian and overseas employment points are capped at 20 in combination. Education points are awarded for the highest eligible qualification, rather than added together for every qualification. [9]
Additional points may be available for qualifying Australian study, specified Australian research qualifications, regional study, a recognised Professional Year or a credentialled community language. Each has separate conditions. [9, 10]
Partner points also require care: an eligible skilled partner may contribute 10 points, while an eligible partner with competent English may contribute 5. Being single, or having an Australian citizen or permanent resident partner, can attract 10 points under the relevant rules. These partner categories are alternatives, not cumulative claims. [10]
The practical goal is an accurate, competitive profile. A higher score can improve your position, but it does not guarantee selection. Avoid claiming work experience, partner skills or qualifications that your evidence cannot support.
English language requirements: IELTS and PTE Academic
English can affect both eligibility and points. For points-tested skilled migration, competent English meets the language threshold but adds no English points; proficient and superior English can contribute 10 and 20 points respectively. [9]
Australia changed its approved English tests and score requirements on 7 August 2025. Use the requirements applicable to the date your test was taken. The table below shows common options for tests taken on or after that date. [21-23]
| English level | IELTS Academic or General Training | PTE Academic: listening / reading / writing / speaking |
|---|---|---|
| Competent | At least 6 in each component | 47 / 48 / 51 / 54 |
| Proficient | At least 7 in each component | 58 / 59 / 69 / 76 |
| Superior | At least 8 in each component | 69 / 70 / 85 / 88 |
Every component must meet the relevant threshold; an overall score alone is insufficient. Earlier test results have different score tables and must remain within the validity rules for the visa. Fully online or at-home versions of tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes. [21-23]
Citizens holding valid passports from specified countries can establish competent English through passport evidence. However, that does not automatically establish proficient or superior English for extra points. If using Pearson, check that you book PTE Academic and meet Australia's requirements. [21]
Occupation lists and skills assessments
Your job title is only the starting point. A skilled-migration assessment considers the nominated occupation, duties, qualifications and employment evidence, together with the occupation list applicable to the visa. An occupation being eligible under one route does not mean it is eligible under every route. [24]
The relevant assessing authority evaluates skills against its requirements. You may need qualifications, academic transcripts, detailed employer references and evidence of paid employment. Assessment procedures, charges and validity vary by authority and pathway. [25]
Healthcare, teaching, engineering, technology and trade occupations can appear in skilled-migration pathways, but eligibility must be checked for the exact occupation and visa. A shortage in an industry is not a visa approval or a job guarantee.
Plan professional registration or licensing separately where your occupation requires it. A migration skills assessment should not be treated as permission to practise a regulated profession.
How to apply for Australia PR
For points-tested skilled migration, a typical sequence is:
Compare your age, occupation, qualifications, employment, English and family circumstances against the relevant visa requirements.
Identify the correct assessing authority and accepted language evidence. Plan around the required validity and timing rules.
Review every proposed claim against the official points table and the evidence you can provide.
Enter the appropriate information in SkillSelect. An EOI is free to submit and generally remains active for two years. Update it when relevant circumstances change. [6, 27]
For subclass 190 or a state-nominated subclass 491 application, follow the relevant government's process. This may include a separate Registration of Interest or nomination application. [26]
If invited, check the points and eligibility requirements carefully. Skilled visa applicants generally have 60 days from the invitation date to lodge their visa application. [6-8]
Submit the application through ImmiAccount, pay applicable charges and provide the required evidence. Complete health checks and provide police certificates or biometrics as required. [8, 31, 32]
Keep contact details and circumstances current. If granted, check entry dates, travel validity and visa conditions before making relocation arrangements.
An EOI is not a visa application and does not provide a bridging visa or permission to stay in Australia. Applicants already in Australia must maintain lawful status. Other PR pathways follow different sequences. [6]
Documents required for an Australia PR application
Your checklist depends on the visa, nominated occupation and family circumstances. Common document categories include: [7, 8, 25, 31, 32]
- Identity: Current passports, identity documents and evidence of any name changes.
- Qualifications: Degree or diploma certificates, academic transcripts and relevant professional qualifications.
- Employment: Employer references describing duties, dates and hours; contracts, payslips, tax records and other requested evidence of paid work.
- Skills and English: Suitable assessment results and accepted language evidence.
- Family relationships: Marriage, birth, adoption or custody documents, and evidence of a de facto relationship or dependency where relevant.
- Nomination or sponsorship: Documents required by the state, territory, family sponsor or employer for the selected route.
- Health and character: Medical examination information, police certificates and any other requested declarations.
- Translations: Original-language records together with English translations that meet the applicable requirements.
Make sure names, dates, duties and employment histories are consistent across your records. A qualification or reference letter by itself may not establish every claim. Family members may also need health or character checks, including some who are not migrating with you. [31, 32]
Australia PR visa costs
The total cost depends on the visa subclass, number and ages of applicants, English evidence, nomination requirements and professional services selected.
Published starting government charges for the main applicant, checked 9 October 2026: [6-8, 28]
| Visa | Starting application charge (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Subclass 189 - Points-tested stream | 6,135 |
| Subclass 190 - Skilled Nominated | 6,140 |
| Subclass 491 - Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) | 6,140 |
These are starting visa charges, not a complete migration package or family quotation. Concessions apply in limited circumstances. Check the official visa page and Visa Pricing Estimator before payment because charges can change. [6-8, 28]
Your budget may also need to cover:
- Additional government charges for accompanying applicants.
- Any applicable second instalment for an adult applicant with less than functional English.
- Skills assessments, English tests and applicable nomination charges.
- Medical examinations, police certificates, biometrics and translations.
- Professional service fees, where you choose assistance.
- Travel, accommodation and initial settlement expenses.
For a regional pathway, budget separately for a later subclass 191 application. Nexus Migration can discuss the services included in your proposed scope and provide a written service-fee quotation. Government and third-party charges should be identified separately. [11, 28]
How long does Australia PR take?
There is no single processing period for every Australian PR application. Your overall journey may include English preparation, a skills assessment, nomination, waiting for an invitation and then visa processing.
Home Affairs publishes a live processing-time guide based on recently decided applications. It is an estimate, not a deadline or guarantee for your case. It also should not be treated as the total time from your first consultation to moving to Australia. [29]
Occupation priorities, nomination places, document completeness and required checks can affect the journey. An EOI may expire without an invitation. Build your plans around confirmed milestones and the actual visa decision. [27, 29]
Including your partner and children
Many skilled pathways allow eligible members of the family unit, such as a spouse or de facto partner and dependent children, to be included. Relationship and dependency requirements must be met, and charges usually apply for additional applicants. [7, 8]
Declare your family circumstances accurately, including relevant family members who will not travel with you. Rules about adding family members differ by visa and application stage. Parents generally need a separate suitable family visa route; they are not ordinarily included as dependent family members in a skilled application. [8, 18]
From permanent residence to Australian citizenship
PR can be a step towards citizenship, but citizenship is a separate process. Under the general residence requirement, applicants normally need four years of lawful residence immediately before applying, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident.
The usual absence limits are no more than 12 months outside Australia across those four years, including no more than 90 days in the final 12 months. Exceptions and special rules can apply. Other criteria include good character and, where applicable, English-language and citizenship-knowledge requirements. [30]
Keep accurate travel records and use the official residence calculator and eligibility guidance when planning an application.
